Produced by San Jose Jazz in conjunction with local high school band directors, Improv 101 teaches improvisation to high school students during at school during band class. The 6-8 week class is taught by a professional Jazz musician/master teacher.
Improv 101 is designed to introduce high school Jazz musicians to improvisation, one of the fundamental elements of Jazz and blues. Until high school, most music training prepares students to read, memorize, and perform music "as written.” These tasks are important, demanding, and time-consuming and are a required aspect of becoming a musician.
Improv 101 teaches students to improvise. To improvise is 1) to invent, compose, or perform with little or no preparation, 2) to play music extemporaneously, especially by inventing variations on a melody or creating new melodies in accordance with a set progression of chords.
Among other things, Students are taught to listen to the musicians they are playing with and to improvise off of what they are hearing. The program provides a liberating experience that helps hone students’ musical instincts.
The Program
One-hour per week for 6-8 weeks with a master teacher coming into the classroom. The class has a curriculum and will use four workbooks and a CD that are distributed to the band director and each student. The instrumental CD was created so students can practice improvising with a band while using the workbooks. This can be done at school or at home.
