Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at Maggiano's at 6:30pm
VidyA is an adventurous new group that merges the virtuosity of Jazz with the melodic and rhythmic nuance of South Indian classical (Carnatic) music. Led by critically-acclaimed saxophonist, Prasant Radhakrishnan along with David Ewell (bass) and Sameer Gupta (Drums), VidyA has emerged with a soulful, penetrating sound that pushes the labels of "fusion" or "world music."These three artists have an almost telepathic interplay, incorporating the forward motion of both Indian Classical and jazz rhythms while elaborating Carnatic ragas infused with melodic richness. The group weaves in and out of the two genres while all the time merging them into one. VidyA translates the language of Carnatic music into the idiom of Jazz.?? VidyA's debut CD features eleven compositions from their extremely successful live repertoire, crafted from performing artist residencies and live performances over the past two years. Encompassing deep forays into Indian Classical ragas and jazz sensibilities, constantly building rhythmic and melodic intensity while always playing from the soul, VidyA's album brings the depth of their live performance to a studio album.
Altered Roots Quartet
Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at Left Bank at 6:30pm
Altered Roots Quartet plays jazz standards in a reggae style, and reggae classics with a jazz sensibility. They used to be called I've Never Been To Brisbane. website Ed Johnson
Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at LB Steak at 6:30pm ED JOHNSON’s mastery of so many different styles, coupled with a passion for harmony vocal and horn arrangements, all factor into a magical blend of vibrant, original contemporary jazz that is winning fans and airplay worldwide. Ed’s original music is evocative of Brazilian pop, but unlike anything you’ve heard before. As a vocalist, Ed Johnson is frequently compared to Ivan Lins, Milton Nascimento, Kenny Rankin, and Michael Franks. As a guitarist and bandleader, critics often cite the lushly exotic, accessible sounds of Airto and Flora Purim. Ed has seven recording projects to his credit, in addition to producer’s credits for other singer/songwriters. Kat Parra
Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at Consuelos at 6:30pm
Kat Parra has leapt beyond the boundaries of the typical latin jazz singer. With her thirst for the exploration of world rhythms and tonalities, she has developed a style of music that encompasses sounds that both transcend and bend the stereotypical definition of latin jazz. She has incorporated not only afro-cuban music, but also added afro-peruvian, middle eastern, south american folklore as well as nueva trova. Most interestingly, she has also been developing, along with her musical director Murray Low, new arrangements of Sephardic music, the music of the Spanish Jews sung in the dying language of Ladino. Kat sings fluently in English, Spanish and Portuguese as well. With this multi-lingual and multi-musical experience, Kat Parra is able to transport her audiences to an exciting and vibrant journey of world and latin music. artist website | watch video Mads Tolling Quartet
Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at The Village at 6:30pm
Two-time Grammy-winning violinist Mads Tolling gained international renown as a member of the Turtle Island String Quartet. The group’s latest release was an awe-inspiring tribute to perhaps the greatest musician of our time (A Love Supreme: the Legacy of John Coltrane, Telarc, 2007.) As a featured soloist, his peerless virtuosity has earned him stage time with some of the heaviest names in jazz, including Stanley Clarke, Kenny Barron, Paquito d’Rivera, Joe Lovano and Stefon Harris. A most exciting development is his recent step into the limelight at the helm of the Mads Tolling Quartet. His self-produced bandleader debut (Speed of Light, 2008) makes a strong case for the violin’s potential to stretch the language of jazz.watch video Kristen Strom Quartet

Brian Ho's Organ Jazz Quartet
Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at Rosie McCann's at 6:30pm
Brian Ho's Organ Jazz Quartet is the unique blend of original and standard material that expands on the legendary sound of jazz with elements of funk, blues, hip-hop, and soul.
Brian Ho plays the Hammond B3 organ. He solos and comps with his right hand while his left hand and feet play organ bass in the same tradition as organ pioneers, Jimmy Smith and Dr. Lonnie Smith. Oscar Panglinan plays tenor, alto, and soprano sax. His solos are soul grabbing as he channels his idols Cannonball Adderly and modern saxophonists such as John Ellis. Scott Miller on guitar fuses jazz, rock and funk which helps to aid in the overall groove. Jim Frink is one of the most versatile drummers where he's able to play all styles from New Orleans Funk to swing to Be-Bop. He has studied with Scot Amendola and Ray Brown.
Together, they are some of the most creative, unique, and forward-thinking young musicians in jazz today.

The Lee Pardini trio is a high energy ensemble in the "Bad Plus" vein. Comprised of Lee on Piano, Kevin Higuchi on Drums and Gus Kambeitz on Bass, this native SJ trio makes for an exciting experience as they channel the Bill Evans Trio, with hints of Bud Powell, all the while making use of original compositions and jazz standards done in new and exciting ways. There are also hints of 70's pop - if you listen closely... Mark Russo Trio

Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at Roux at 6:30pm Wally Schnalle has been skirting around the Bay Area jazz scene since he quit his Silicon Valley desk job in order to pursue a career playing drums back in 1984. Since then, the freewheeling percussionist has found himself headlining shows across California as well as landing on the bill for several festivals, including the big one in Monterey. In between concerts, Schnalle’s schedule resembles nothing of his cubicle impaired past life – in fact, it’s pretty much one giant drum-athon, from teaching lessons to his position as editor for DRUM! Magazine. Wally recently released Physics & Magic, a powerful display of modern jazz fusion interspersed with the kind of classic nuances that merit timeless appreciation. artist website | watch video Jessica Johnson
Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at Citrus at 6;30pm
San Jose native Jessica Johnson has been turning heads and ears with her smooth and soulful brand of jazz infused R&B, earning more praise and awards than most musicians twice her age receive in a lifetime. At 20 years old, what Johnson may lack in professional experience is made up for with a voice as strong and bright as a young Aretha Franklin. Her recently released debut CD, Till It Happens, is a dynamic collection of R&B treasures that span from Stevie Wonder's "You and I" to classics like "Summertime" and "Cry Me a River." With a promising start towards a brilliant career, San Jose's own Jessica Johnson might be one of the next divas of soul. artist website | watch video Jazz Mechanics Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at Rosie McCann's at 6;30pm
Based in downtown San Jose, The Jazz Mechanics have emerged from their machine shop, crafting a new modern voice in Jazz. This hopped up trio expands the genre of improvisational music, performing largely original compositions that draw on a variety of influences including bebop jazz, R&B grooves and Balkan melodies. Laying down the foundation for the band's hard hitting force and reinventing the role of acoustic bass, is bass player and composer Endika. On piano is Daniel Fillip, a motor city native with a background in modern and latin jazz and a long time member of the Afro-Cuban group Charangon Nueve. Back on the traps, and down in the grease pit, drummer Michael Brilliot brings a rhythmic toolbox to the band that is grounded in diversity of styles, from jazz and New Orleans based funk and rhythm and blues to roots rock and country. Together these three Jazz Mechanics are a finely tuned jazz machine that infuse rock and roll energy into their performances and draw the audience in for a rich and dynamic experience. website
