Guitarist John Stowell and saxophonist Michael Zilber join ace rhythm section John Shifflett (bass) and Jason Lewis (drums) at the Hilton to play songs from their new CD, Shot Through With Beauty (named as one of the 10 Best Recordings of 2011 by noted jazz writer Andrew Gilbert & KQED).
Both musicians have established themselves as artists of quality and taste; Zilber was described by NEA Jazz Master David Liebman as "…one of the best players and composers around anywhere: Period" and All About Jazz commented, "…Stowell seems to pull arching motifs out of thin air, eschewing clichés while maintaining a swinging essence."
John Stowell first attracted attention in a duo format with bassist David Friesen. They recorded and toured prolifically for seven years, with performances in the US, Canada, Europe and Australia. In 1983, John and David joined flutist Paul Horn and Paul’s son Robin Horn (on drums) for a historic tour of the Soviet Union (the first time in forty years that an American jazz group had been invited to play public performances in Russia). Stowell has played or toured with Milt Jackson, Lionel Hampton and Art Farmer, as well as being a contributing columnist for magazines including Downbeat, Guitar Player and several others.
Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Mike Zilber has performed and/or recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Smith, Sonny Stitt, Liebman, Bob Berg, Eddie Henderson, Geoff Keezer, Donald Harrison, Dave Douglas and many more. Zilber recorded two critically acclaimed OWL-EMI Records as a leader, The Heretic and Stranger in Brooklyn, which was named one of the top 30 CDs of all time by Jazzfusion.com. Michael has performed in numerous musical settings as a leader and sideman with groups including Weather Wayne, The Billy Collins Project, and Happy Hour. Zilber teaches at the Jazzschool Institute in Berkeley, runs the Los Medanos College Jazz studies program and has a doctorate from New York University. johnstowell.com
