TWO GREAT EVENTS FOR LATIN JAZZ IN SILICON VALLEY

Masters of Latin Jazz Concert - Ray Vega, John Calloway, and Jesus Diaz performing with the Stanford Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble

Latin Jazz master trumpter Ray Vega, flautist John Calloway and percussionist Jesus Diaz perform together in a rare collaborative concert on Saturday, March 6, 7:30 PM at Stanford's Dinkelspiel Auditorium. They will be accompanied by the Stanford Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble. Each artist has made important, unique contributions to the idiom, ranging from pure Cuban Son and Timba, to the formation of Salsa and Latin Jazz in New York City, to the world and funk influences of the West Coast. Ray, John and Jesus have each selected several compositions especially for this concert, which promises to be stylistically diverse - and suitable for dancing, if you dare! Both classic and contemporary works will be presented in a unique blend that will leave all listeners with a greater appreciation of the wide spectrum of music that comprises Latin Jazz.

Mr. Vega traces the idiom's humble beginnings via artists such as James Reese Europe, Fletcher Henderson and Duke Ellington; explores its development through Machito, Mario Bauza, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker; and finally illustrates its current evolution up to Jerry Gonzalez and The Fort Apache Band and beyond.
